The UK Department for International Development (DFID) Tanzania conducted a field trip to a number of hubs in Dar es Salaam and SmartLab was privileged to be among the selected hubs.
DFID is a UK government department that leads the UK’s work to end extreme poverty. The field trip took place on 12th June 2019 with a team of 16 members led by Catherine Barreto mainly to get an understanding of the innovation space and get a sneak peek on what is currently on the ground as regards to how hubs are performing in the innovation ecosystem.
SmartLab had a chance to present to the team about our mission and goals towards improving the innovation ecosystem through our unique projects and scope particularly in connecting learning institutions with corporates.
Edwin Bruno, the CEO of Smart Codes also took them through his journey from school, the gap he realized as a software engineer, his dream as a start-up and how he ventured out to establish and now own a fully operational company. He further explained his passion to support startups and mentioned key challenges they face as well as how they can beat identified hiccups to succeed and remain relevant and sustainable. He also explained the various products that have so far been produced by Smart Lab/Smart codes such as M-Paper, Primus, and Kwanza and gave a recap on the different circumstances under which startups can develop their ideas and get the support they need from donors and corporates. The team had a few questions to ask and got a clear understanding of how SmartLab operates in the innovation landscape.
